The saddle is one of the elements that can have an important influence on the riding experience of your e bike. Depending on the type of use you make of your electric bicycle, the distance and your morphology, you can choose a type of saddle that best suits your needs.
The e-bike saddles are divided into three categories depending to the shape:
- Rounded: generally appreciated for long distances and for cyclists who prefer comfortable rides. Weight is often distributed more evenly and this shape allows you to limit the heat while driving;
- Flat: designed for short distances and intense driving efforts, therefore perfect for races that require regular position changes;
- Semi-rounded: a middle ground between the two previous forms.
The width of the saddle depends on two characteristics in particular: the size of the cyclist's pelvis and the position on the bike. The width of the pelvis will directly affect the distance between the support points of the ischium, i.e. the 2 points of contact with the saddle. For a wider basin, a larger saddle is recommended, considering that the classic width of a saddle is about 135mm.
The position on the bike and the distribution of your weight between the saddle, handlebar and pedals is different depending on the use you make of the electric bicycle. A wider saddle is recommended for those who do not use it for sports / racing. It is important to keep in mind that too large a saddle can hinder pedaling movement and cause friction on the inner thighs over long distances.
Finally, it is not uncommon to find the same saddle model offered with different types of material, which will affect the lightness and comfort of the pedal-assisted bike:
- Titanium: the most comfortable material with a low weight;
- Steel: relatively comfortable;
- Aluminium: relatively light;
- Carbon: the lightest, with excellent shock and vibration absorption capacity.
So which saddle to choose?
Sport Cyclist: semi-rounded saddle with a classic width (135mm) or suitable for the size of the pelvis. Flat saddle for those who like to change positions regularly.
Recreational Cyclist: rounded saddle with classic or slightly wider width.
