E-bike: some numbers.

2020, in addition to being an unfortunate year marked by Covid, was also the year in which e-bikes established themselves as a means of transport for short-distance travel.

The needs that emerged from the Covid-19 pandemic have enhanced the peculiarities of two wheels such as usability, distancing, guaranteed speed of travel, ease of parking and sustainability especially in urban areas”.

These are the elements which, according to Gary Fabris, head of electric vehicles at Ancma, have driven the boom in e-bike purchases.

According to the association it is "a development which, after the government measures to support the purchase of electric bikes and the push given by fleets and shared mobility, could have a further boost thanks to the renewal of the ecobonus which provides for an allocation of 150 million euros up to 2026”.

The numbers for 2020 speak clearly: over 40 thousand more pieces were sold compared to 2019.

After the first lockdown, 30% of Italians declared themselves interested in purchasing an e-bike against a European average of 17%. The survey revealed it State of Nation by Shimano, carried out on a sample of 13,000 citizens in 11 European countries.

The choice of potential cyclists is motivated by the possibility of easily overcoming climbs and long distances (32%), the desire to improve one's physical (30%) and mental (22%) performance and the desire to reduce the environmental impact of one's vehicle transport (18%).

Europe is the market area with the fastest growth rates: in 2018 it represented 20,12% of the global market and in 2019 it recorded +23%. The forecasts up to 2021 give growth in Europe of 6.23%, with Germany, France and Italy among the top positions.

The success of the pedal-assisted bicycle in recent years is certainly innovation, which has progressed over time, improving design and performance.

The downside is certainly the scarcity of bikes on the market.

If it is true, in fact, that Covid has given a boost to the sale of e-bikes, it is also true that there have been production lines closed for months, coinciding with an unexpected wave of requests.

All this, as we said in our article “Update on the e-bike market and the actions taken by e-bike travel, led to a slowdown in the production chain and a consequent difficulty in obtaining e-bikes and spare parts.

In order to fully enjoy the beautiful season, riding a sparkling e-bike, you must not be intimidated by long waiting times, but you need to work in advance and book your e-bike as soon as possible!
