Bosch increases microchip production in Europe

It is a well-known fact that the availability of raw materials and chips is now lacking and leads to many problems, including repercussions on e-bike deliveries.

For this reason, Bosch has taken steps to address the current shortage by expanding its factory in Reutlingen.

The project envisages an allocation of 250 million euros by 2025, to which would be added a previous investment of 400 million euros expected for global semiconductor production in 2022.

This decision will help Bosch meet the ever-growing demand for chips used in mobility applications.

“We are further expanding our semiconductor production capacity in Reutlingen – said Stefan Hartung, chairman of the board of Bosch – This new investment will not only strengthen our competitive position, but will also benefit our customers and help address the semiconductor supply crisis”.

Thanks to the planned expansion, another 3,600 square meters of space will be available for the clean rooms which, starting from 2025, will produce semiconductors based on the technology already present in the Reutligen plant.

One of the strong points of the plan prepared by Bosch is certainly the desire to focus on cutting-edge technologies: in the Reutligen plant 150 and 200 mm technology is used, while the Dresden plant produces chips on 300 mm wafers. millimetres.

In both plants, however, production methods based on data-driven process control are used.

“AI methods, combined with connectivity – said Markus Heyn, member of the Bosch board of management and president of Mobility Solutions – have helped us achieve continuous, data-driven improvement in manufacturing to produce ever-better chips”.
