Anti-theft devices: how to keep your e-Bike safe

For many of us, fortunately, the bicycle has become a tool for everyday use, not just a weekend hobby.

In fact, more and more people have made the choice to move in a healthier and more environmentally sustainable way by using e-bikes for home-work travel and there is nothing more unpleasant than being robbed of our bikes.

Of course, there is no padlock that can guarantee the 100%, but the purchase of a good security system cannot be underestimated.

There are several factors that can influence the choice.

First of all, security systems serve as deterrent “at first sight” for bad guys, for this reason it must appear solid and robust, while maintaining small dimensions and weight.

Another fundamental factor in evaluating a padlock is its cut resistance: often, in fact, the security system is broken with wire cutters which do not only act by cutting the material, but are a real press which crush the anti-theft device to the point of reducing its resistance.

For this reason, a good anti-theft device must be resistant not only to cuts but also to cuts crushing of the material.

Usually the resistance is indicated in the padlock packaging with a numerical value which illustrates whether the system ensures good resistance even when faced with the use of wire cutters with a lever arm.

Therefore, if your e-bike is often left in isolated places where thieves could act undisturbed with large wire cutters, you must absolutely choose a product capable of offering strong resistance to cutting and crushing actions.

Another element to consider when choosing a padlock is the lightness.

Anyone who travels many kilometers every day will need to equip themselves with a light and comfortable tool, capable of not taking up pedaling and maneuvering, while still guaranteeing a high degree of reliability.

The burglar alarm will also have to be large enough to be able to anchored to a fixed element. You can have a great security system, but if it doesn't allow you to secure your bike to a pole, railing or bike rack, any thief will be able to pick up your bike and walk away with it unmolested.

Finally the anti-theft device will have to be practical. If you make several stops a day you can't waste hours securing your e-bike.

There are many anti-theft devices on the market, from chains to U-Locks up to "Python" anti-theft devices.

The security system that we have found to be the most functional and which can accommodate the different needs of users is the folding anti-theft device "Snake”.

Abuse is the undisputed leader in folding bike locks.

This system is light, comfortable and practical and is supplied with a support that can be mounted directly on the bike frame.

This padlock is made of steel sheets connected to each other by joints so as to make it extensible and foldable on itself while the vulcanised cover avoids scratches to the bike frame.

The safety level of the Abus "Snake" systems is maximum and offers very high resistance to cuts and pressure.

This type of padlock can be closed with a key lock or with a numerical code and there are different sizes and models, some also equipped with an audible anti-theft device, to guarantee a further deterrent for intruders.

Furthermore, devices have existed for some years GPS concealable in the frame of our e-bikes and connectable to the smartphone via app.

These tools warn the user if the bike is moved and offer a macro geolocalization to identify the place where the vehicle is located and a finer localization capable of determining with extreme precision the room where the bike has been hidden.

In conclusion, even if there is no such thing as an inviolable anti-theft device, the advancement of technology has developed security systems which, if used correctly and with care, allow our beloved e-bikes to be (almost) completely safe!
