Recent studies have shown how cyclists (whether professional or amateur) are better able to combat infections caused by that damned black beast of Covid-19.

 

Published at the beginning of October 2020 and entitled “Maximal Exercise Capacity is Inversely Related to Hospitalization Secondary to Corona Virus Diseases 2019”, this research compared the state of physical fitness and the course of the disease.

Subjects who carried out an exercise test to evaluate aerobic capacity between 2016 and 2020 and who took the Covid-19 test between 29 February and 31 May 2020 were taken into consideration.

Among these, 246 patients positive for Covid-19 in various forms were identified, from asymptomatic to the most severe forms.

From the comparison of the stress tests and the course of the disease, it emerged that 89 people who contracted the more severe form showed lower sporting prowess than those who contracted the virus more mildly.

The Ministry of Health guidelines on physical activity speak of at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic physical activity or a minimum of 75 minutes of vigorous activity, plus strengthening exercises for the major muscle groups at least a couple of times a week.
