Europe favors work related to bikenomics

The European Commission recently adopted the Declaration on Cycling, a very important document for the development of the sector.

This document aims above all to bring huge benefits to the cycling economy, thanks to the creation of jobs in the sector.

One of the eight principles of Declaration on Cycling, puts full support for the green jobs “quality” and the “development of a global European cycling industry”.

This is because, as the statement states, there is a need both for “greater uptake of cycling means more high-quality local jobs and is beneficial for citizens” but also that “the economy and industry of EU cycling and also contribute to the objectives of the EU industrial strategy”.

The commitments that Europe assumes in this treaty therefore concern the foundations for establishing a sustainable and prolonged development of activities related to bikenomics, and therefore:

  • support the cycling services sector, including social economy entities, and the circular use of bicycles (reuse, repair and rental);
  • create the conditions for increase European production of a wide range of bicycles and their components;
  • create favorable conditions for stimulate high-quality jobs and cycling clusters, including cycling tourism, in order to significantly increase the number of quality cycling-related jobs, support SMEs and incentivize their skills and professional training;
  • make the most attractive sector and enable major job-to-job transitions from other relevant sectors;
  • support cycling service industries, such as bike sharing and cycling logistics, especially in cities and strengthen the integration of cycle logistics into the delivery system.
  • recognize the European cycling industry as partner in the mobility system in order to strengthen resilience, sustainability, circularity and digitalisation in the cycling sector;

As for the professions linked to bikenomics which will have new life in the coming years thanks to targeted investments in green jobs, we find: bicycle maintenance technicians, bike sellers, cycling teachers, bicycle logistics operators, maintenance technicians and producers of bicycle components , tour operators and cycle tour guides, developers of bike parking infrastructures and mechanics specializing in e-bikes.

It is increasingly clear and evident that cycling is a particularly important topic at a European level.
