Germany: there is a boom in cycle tourists

Recent years have seen a significant growth in active holidays, especially cycle tourism.

This mode of travel not only allows you to have fun without polluting, but also allows you to visit places and traditions slowly and carefully, which would not be possible with a car.

Frank Hofmann, (ADFC's National Charmain for Tourism) took stock of the situation of cycle tourism in Germany, showing extremely interesting data which attests to the excellent health of the sector.

In Germany this type of tourism represents the 12% of all tourism and brought in revenue of approx 12 billion in 2020.

It must also be considered that Germany has been accustomed to cycling for a long time: the cycle tourism routes are very well looked after and maintained and the German nation has spent around 45 million euros on promotion in the area, with various marketing tools available on different platforms.

An identikit of the typical cycle tourist also emerged from the data: in 90% cases the cycle tourist organizes himself independently, in 32% he uses an e-bike and in 54% cases he does this type of experience as a couple. Finally, 61% is for men who practice cycle tourism, while 39% is for women.

Since most cycle tourists prefer to organize their trip independently, it is interesting to know how they organize it and the type of sources used.

From Hofman's webinar it can be seen that the majority of people (76%) obtain information from the Web, 43% from friends and acquaintances, 42% from maps, finally from Apps (35%) and from Tourist Offices (23%).

During the journey, however, German cycle tourists mostly rely on road signs (67%), Apps (52%) and Maps (48%).

It's Italy?

Italy ranks third in the Top 5 most popular destinations among German cycle tourists with a 9.1%, preceded by the Netherlands (13.6%) and Austria (12.2%) and followed by France (6.7%) and Spain (3.6%).
