The fifth edition of ComuniCiclabili is underway

Applications are officially open for the fifth edition of ComuniCiclabili, the initiative of FIAB, the Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation which objectively evaluates the current state of a city in various aspects that have to do with cycling, from infrastructure to institutional communication.

The last edition ended with a network that now includes more than 150 cities throughout Italy: not only small towns but also dozens of capitals and larger cities such as Milan, Rome, Turin, Bologna and Florence.

The objective of this initiative is to stimulate the development of cycling policies by administrations.

Among the novelties of this edition there is the evaluation sheet which includes further innovations such as the two-way cycle path and the e-bis urban cycle paths, in addition to the roads made F-Bis "cycle-pedestrian itineraries", which have great potential in terms of commuting and cycle tourism.

Involving and proactively directing municipalities is essential for the successful outcome of the virtuous transition of our cities – declared Alessandro Tursi, FIAB President -, and ComuniCiclabili is the right tool. FIAB stands alongside willing administrations to provide all its expertise and thirty years of experience. From today also with a training course from the Scuola dei ComuniCiclabili dedicated to local authority technicians. To this end we have just signed an agreement between FIAB and UNITEL-Unione dei Tecnici degli Enti Locali, since they are the key figures so that the new important resources, starting with those of the PNRR, are used in the best way with valid and effective projects".

To achieve an overall bike smile evaluation of ComuniCiclabili, there are four indicators that FIAB considers essential: cycle tourism, urban mobility, governance and communication-promotion.

For the fifth edition, the Italian Environment and Bicycle Federation wanted to update this last section, to highlight the importance of communication in this area.

Furthermore, to give a signal to mayors and councillors, it was chosen to take into account, with a minus score, motoring events of different nature held in the last year and which, therefore, will weigh in the final evaluation of the municipality.

The ecological transition must necessarily start from a change of cultural paradigm, especially in a country like ours, congested and penalized by one of the highest and most unsustainable rates of motorization in the world.
