Bologna: regional incentives for those who travel to work by bike

The Council of the Municipality of Bologna has approved membership of the Emilia-Romagna Region "Bike to Work" protocol to encourage people to use bicycles for home-work travel.

The Region has made over 1.8 million euros available to the municipality which will be invested in structural interventions and to facilitate travel.

Approximately 1.5 million Euros, to which other municipal funds will be added, will be used to create cycle paths and maintain roads, thus guaranteeing the safety of citizens and encouraging the use of bicycles.

The remainder will be used to encourage public and private employees to go to work by bicycle.

In fact, through mobility management agreements signed with the municipality, entities and companies will be able to request mileage reimbursements for commuting from home to work by bicycle, as well as the reduction of costs for the use of bike sharing and for storing bikes in the velo stations.

The guidelines for accessing the tender published by the Municipality will take into account:

• distribution of resources based on the number of employees of the companies/institutions that will present their expression of interest in participating in the project, including the Municipality of Bologna;
• company co-financing equal to at least 30% of the value of the proposal that each individual company will present to the Municipality of Bologna;
• constraint of the presence of the mobility management agreement signed with the Municipality of Bologna in force on the date of submission of the application;
• it will be possible to present a proposal for each or more of the planned interventions, guaranteeing coverage of the overall co-financing quota.

For companies that want to adopt a complete program for the development of corporate bike to work, they can also access tools such as "Bike to Business" proposed by Bikenomist, which aims to make the company Bike Friendly.

This program includes the design and installation of parking for bicycles and vehicles dedicated to micromobility, corporate training, internal communication, external communication support and even the supply of bicycles, both muscular and eBikes.
