Florence-Prato cycle path: it's now a reality!

Italy is a wonderful country, rich in tradition, history, art and culture which, like never before this year, has worked to renew itself to make its cities citizen-friendly.

The incentives, promotions and works implemented to make traveling by bicycle increasingly easier and safer have given great impetus to the use of alternative means to the car which, until now, were little used.

The last grandiose project in chronological order concerns the Tuscany.

On November 16th the City Council of the capital approved the urban planning variant necessary to create the Super Cycle Path that will connect Florence to Prato.

This will be the first European-standard high-capacity, long-distance cycling infrastructure in our country.

To be defined "super” must meet very high standards compared to those we are used to, including the width of the route, curvature radii that ensure constant speeds and passage along attractor poles and connections between different cities.

The Super Track will be 15 km long and 4 meters wide, there will be a curb without edges to increase safety in the event of a fall and the flooring will be made with recycled asphalt, low processing temperatures with consequent energy saving and reduction of bituminous vapors , as well as increased durability of the material.

A project that embraces a philosophy green and eco – sustainable in all and for all.

Furthermore, this project includes a route with few deviations and intersections designed to guarantee great safety.

The Super Pista will also be equipped with lighting with presence sensors for switching on at night, there will be LED steplights with amber-coloured gem and video cameras integrated in strategic points.

The Councilor for Urban Planning and Environment of Florence Cecilia Del Re declares: “This is an infrastructure conceived as a large green axis which aims to support the transition from car to bicycle but also to create new cycling demand thanks to the offer of an innovative service not comparable to existing ones: a path with a width suitable for sustained speeds of up to 25 km per hour, which guarantees the possibility of overtaking and a linear route interrupted by the least possible number of interferences.”

The works will start at the end of 2021 and the route will start from via Perfetti Ricasoli in Florence to cross the municipal border following the route of the Two Houses.

A great, unprecedented work that we hope will not remain the only one!
