7 routes to visit Bologna by e-bike!

Here you are seven cycling routes which explore both directions of Bologna: to the south towards the Apennines, and to the north towards the Plain.

These routes, which begin and end in the city center, are loops of various lengths. Longer routes can be shortened by using regional trains departing from Bologna station.

The routes are mainly on asphalted roads, but also include unpaved sections.

During these tours, which combine naturalistic and cultural elements, you will have the opportunity to explore some of the most evocative places in the city and its surroundings, together with important sites linked to the history of cycling in Bologna.

1. Via di Casaglia, Villa Spada and the Chiusa Park

This 17 km panoramic route winds along the first hills and develops almost entirely along the ring of ring roads that enclose the historic center of Bologna.

2. Villa Ghigi, the hermitage of Ronzano and the hairpin bends of via del Genio

In Bologna, just move away from the center for a few minutes to immerse yourself in the nature and tranquility of the hills, on the last slopes of the Bolognese Apennines, just before they give way to the plain. You have to be willing to pedal uphill a bit, but the effort is amply rewarded by the beauty of these places. On this Tour you will discover the essence of Bologna concentrated in less than 14 kilometres.

3. San Pietro di Ozzano and the Calanchi dell'Abbadessa

The Gessi and Calanchi dell'Abbadessa Regional Park, which extends across the municipalities of Bologna, Ozzano dell'Emilia, Pianoro and San Lazzaro di Savena, is the largest karst park in Emilia-Romagna. In this 48 km tour, you will discover one of the most evocative parts, that of the gullies.

4. The history of Bolognese cycling between the Savena valley and the Zena valley

The Zena valley and the Savena valley are two iconic places of Bolognese cycling, the two most classic valley bottom routes. Their well-paved roads, free of prohibitive slopes, panoramic and with little traffic, have always attracted amateurs and beginners alike. And for those looking for a climb, the further you get into the valley, the more you have the opportunity to try your hand at hilly climbs, crossing from one valley to another on traffic-free secondary roads and small rural villages where tranquility reigns.

5. The Casalecchio lock and the Tizzano Hermitage

On this 35 km tour you will find a taste of all this, seasoned with a pinch of Bologna's history and the advanced hydraulic system that made the city a modern and early industrial reality.

6. The Reno river, the Navile canal and peasant civilization

In this 47 km tour the protagonist is water: we invite you to explore the rural landscapes of the Bolognese plain by first following the course of the Reno river, then the Navile canal.

7. The Ciclovia del Sole and the lower Bolognese area

The Ciclovia del Sole was born within the project for the European itinerary EuroVelo 7, which aims to connect the northernmost point of Europe, North Cape, with the southernmost point, Malta. In this Tour you will travel part of the Bolognese stage of this epic itinerary, along the fascinating stretch that crosses the plain following the disused Bologna-Verona railway. Line 2 of the Bicipolitana follows almost entirely the route of the European itinerary of the Ciclovia del Sole.
